Solana started in 2017, while its mainnet beta went live in March 2020. The project accumulated well-known investors like Andreessen Horowitz and has partnerships with Sam Bankman-Fried (FTX), Coinbase, Circle (USDC) and others.

SOL is used to reward stakers and validators, to pay for the transaction fees and it is planned to use SOL as a governance token e.g. a token-weighted voting on future development decisions.
