Avalanche consist of three interoperable blockchains (exchange, contract, platform) that have different roles and enable better speed and scalability. Transaction finalization takes less than 2 seconds. Blockchains can be added for a subcription fee.

The blockchain mainnet is live since September 2020, with more than 10 million blocks created. It partners with Mastercard and BitGo and has investors such as Andreessen Horowitz on board.

AVAX is used to secure the network through staking, to pay for fees, and to provide a basic unit of account between the multiple subnetworks created on the Avalanche platform.
